The Hydrogen Wind Turbine: Design of a wind turbine optimised for hydrogen production

Abstract “Green” hydrogen produced using electrolysis and zero-carbon electricity may be a path for the EU to reduce its dependence on natural gas imports support green transition. The uses 10 Mt of yearly production, representing potential 120 GW market wind industry. Placing production (electrolysers) near energy source (wind turbines) instead consumer (e.g. fertiliser producers) changes transportation from power opens new design possibilities. This work investigates how an off-grid turbine designed differ traditional one. paper first describes numerical modelling framework used estimate cost “hydrogen turbine.” main parameters system (generator rating, rotor diameter, electrolyser rating battery capacity) are then optimised levelised (LCOH). Results show that LCOH-optimised should have lower specific (i.e. larger rotor) than LCOE-optimised design. We find 7% LCOH reduction compared reference system, opening door future turbines directly production.
